What you don’t know can hurt…what’s wrong with supermarkets.
The September 2002 Malbouffe, “What’s Wrong With Supermarkets?” featured a link to a report by Corporate Watch (www.corporatewatch.org.uk). This month we follow this up with a new guide from Greenpeace on UK supermarket branded food products that due to mass production, intense processing and bizarre sourcing practices cannot provide the basic transparency to enable the brands to verify or guarantee their products contain no GM material. The guide works by categorising the food types then listing the brands that so far cannot reassure their customers. Many of the supermarkets that stock the offending brands (for some it is their own brand products!!) have clear “no GM” marketing claims. I hasten to add that this report is based on UK supermarket brands, where food legislation falls ultimately under EU law!
This report illustrates that for all their talk, promises and commitments – mass retailers, industrial farmers and industrial food producers will continue to disrespect, subvert and risk the food choice and security of consumers – no matter who or where you are.
This excellent report is available at: www.greenpeace.org.uk
Happy shopping. Malbouffe.
